Why Does My Toilet Keep Running?
A toilet that continues running after it has been flushed can waste water and create an irritating sound. In many cases, the problem involves one of several components inside the tank.
Worn or Misaligned Flapper
The flapper seals the opening between the tank and bowl. When it becomes brittle, warped, dirty, or misaligned, water can continue leaking into the bowl.
A flapper may look acceptable but still fail to create a complete seal.
Improper Chain Adjustment
The chain connecting the flush handle to the flapper must have the correct amount of slack. A chain that is too short can prevent the flapper from closing. A chain that is too long can become tangled or trapped underneath it.
Faulty Fill Valve
The fill valve controls water entering the tank. A worn or damaged valve may fail to shut off correctly or may refill the tank inconsistently.
Incorrect Float Setting
When the float is adjusted too high, water may continuously enter the overflow tube. The float can often be adjusted, although damaged components should be replaced.
Cracked Overflow Tube
A damaged overflow tube can allow water to escape from the tank into the bowl. This type of repair may require additional disassembly.
When Should the Toilet Be Replaced?
Repairing internal tank components is often cost-effective. Replacement may be worth considering when the toilet is cracked, unstable, inefficient, repeatedly clogged, or requiring frequent repairs.
Water around the base of the toilet may indicate a separate problem involving the supply line, tank bolts, toilet seal, or fixture itself.
